My Approach
As a long-time communications pro, I know that effective writing centers on respect for the reader and their limited time and attention. Over the course of my career, I've written press releases, funding appeals, grant proposals, letters to the editor, annual reports, social media content, and more.
Across genres, I've maintained a commitment to brevity and plain language. A good message doesn't need dressing up with formality; it needs an accurate and confident writer (that's me) to deliver it to your audience. And if you're not yet sure what your message is, I can facilitate that process of discovery and refinement.
Great writing goes along with effective visuals. Creatively pairing image and text has been a cornerstone of my career for 20 years. I'm not a graphic designer or an artist, but I am scrappy, innovative, and determined to make every piece of communications as visually engaging as it is well-written.
Projects
The Jane Fund of Central Massachusetts
As a board member and then as interim executive director, I led and co-led communications strategy for a small but multifaceted organization. I persuaded supporters to donate their time and money to a stigmatized yet important cause and secured grant funding from local agencies. In annual reports, I combined evocative images with timely interviews and informative graphics to bring supporters along as the organization evolved. And I've collaborated closely with colleagues at other funds and allied organizations to speak clearly and reassuringly about resilience in the face of legal challenges.
Worldwide Universities Network
I conducted interviews with academic researchers around the world and distilled their questions, methodologies, and findings for non-specialist readers. Working from their explanations, published papers, and my own research, I offered an inside look at knowledge production and the global challenges that drive academic research.
