My Approach
Editing requires both confidence and humility: the confidence to say what's not working and the humility to respect the author's choices and voice. I feel strongly that even copy editing is an art, not a science. There's no prize for absolute adherence to a specific style guide, but there are major benefits to taking informed, deliberate risks in your writing.Â
My work as an editor has long focused on the audience: Who's reading this text and why? How can we best facilitate their interest and understanding? What's the best way to respect their time while getting the details right? Are we offering an engaging visual experience? Let's work together to answer those questions to make your newsletter, website, annual report, or other project the best it can be.
Projects
Futurity.org at university of rochester
Across multiple roles, including editor of the site, I maximized public engagement with academic research findings through strategic sharpening, trimming, and reframing. My work at Futurity included leading a site refresh, a 2019 Webby honoree, to better serve its 8 million annual users. I also developed training sessions to share Futurity's approach with university communications teams across the country.
